Former Yankees manager Lou Piniella set to return to Bombers as YES Network television analyst

Lou Piniella, Belstaff Giubbotti a fan favorite as both player and manager, is deep in negotiations and close to signing a deal to return to the Bombers as an analyst for the Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network. He also will likely serve as a spring training instructor.

According to industry sources, Canada Goose Jakke Piniella will do a limited number of appearances for YES in the broadcast booth and studio.

Piniella would join YES’ cast of analysts that includes Ken Singleton, Belstaff John Flaherty, Paul O’Neill, David Cone, Al Leiter and play-by-play man Michael Kay.

Piniella is no stranger to the Yankees broadcast booth. After being fired — for the second time — as Bombers manager by George Steinbrenner in 1988, Belstaff CoatPiniella still had a year left on his contract. He spent the 1989 season in the Madison Square Garden Network’s Yankees booth.

From there, Piniella went on to become manager of the Cincinnati in 1990 and led the Reds to a World Series title. Over the course of time he went on to manage Seattle, Tampa Bay and the Cubs. During those years there were periodic reports of a possible reconciliation with the Yankees, but they never came to pass.

Piniella announced his retirement as Cubs skipper in August of 2010, saying that he needed to care for his ailing mother. He was happy working last season for the San Francisco Giants as a scout/special consultant. Team officials wanted to expand his role, but because of family considerations, Piniella declined, needing to stay close to his Tampa, Fla. home.

Now, sources said, Piniella wants to stay to baseball. It looks like the Yankees are providing that opportunity. This likely means Yankees fans will see Piniella in the YES booth when the Bombers play the Rays in 2012. The Yankees open the season April 6 in Tampa. Piniella should have a role in that telecast.

After leaving Tampa in 2006, Piniella spent a season working for Fox Sports on its major league baseball package.
